How are Boys State Delegates Chosen?

Boys State is made up of delegates who represent a local American Legion Post. These posts sponsor delegates from their service area and may include delegates from a number of schools. The Post Commander and Boys State Chairman are given general guidelines as to the selection process, but each Post is free to develop its own procedures.

Some Posts conduct an elaborate screening process involving written work and interviews. Other Posts ask the local school for recommendations and still others simply make the selection on their own. Regardless of the method, each delegates is sponsored by an Oklahoma American Legion Post and that delegate represents not only the Post, but also his school and community. Although there may be (and usually are) co-sponsors from the community, the delegate remains responsible to the Legion Post who sponsors him.

Delegates to Boys State must be a high school junior at the time of selection (usually March or early April.) He must be of good moral character and have the qualities of good citizenship which gives indication of future service to his community. There is no grade point requirement for Boys State, but it should be remembered that the program includes a rigorous academic segment. Leaders and those with potential for leadership are prime candidates for selection
