What Boys State Is

Boy Staters presenting the Salute in the AuditoriumOklahoma Boys State is a part of the Oklahoma American Legion Americanism Commission’s Children and Youth program. This program is dedicated to providing the young people of our state with services which include recreation, education, and long term care. The most famous of these programs are American Legion Baseball, Oklahoma Boys State, and the American Legion Children’s Home.

Boys State was established more than 60 years ago to combat the attempts of communists, anarchists, and other subversives who were attempting to recruit America’s youth during the Great Depression. Their anti-government message was countered by the American Legion through the establishment of the Boys State program. Dedicated veterans of World War I were determined that what they had won on the battlefield would not be lost at home.

Boys State, then, is a program of citizenship. True, there is a great deal of recreations and other such activities, but the ultimate purpose is to develop good citizens who commit themselves to service to their community, state, and nation.

GOVERNMENT

The Boys State Governor receiving the Oath of OfficeOklahoma Boys State particularly emphasizes the political process through simulations of local and state government. All delegates are assigned to serve in legislatures and those elected to judicial offices also serve in the court simulations. County and state officers also fulfill their duties and city government officials coordinate the activities of their city.

To achieve its purpose, Oklahoma Boys State must be highly organized. Every delegate is assigned to a "city" which consists of a dormitory floor housing about 60 delegates. Three floors (cities) form a county and four counties form Boys State. Delegates have ample opportunity to participate in the political process at many levels.

Those whose final assignment is the legislature are expected to write and introduce bills of a significant nature. Bills passed by the legislatures and signed by the governor are frequently sent to the actual state legislature for their consideration. In the past, such bills have inspired actual laws.

LEADERSHIP

Delegates to Boys State have the opportunity to develop and display their leadership. Unfettered by any hometown reputation or advantages/disadvantages, delegates interact with their peers and lead or follow as their situation demands. Whether serving in an elected position or just helping to organize city athletics or activities, real leaders come to the front as opportunities present themselves.

For whatever reason, leaders are people who have followers. Boys State begins as 720 individuals who quickly form into cohesive units. Leaders and followers emerge; some leaders step to the front on day one, others during the week and some not until the final days. Frequently leadership rotates among many people as needed. Many, however, remain followers throughout the week, and this is not a bad thing. Just as it is important to have good leaders, it is likewise important to have good followers who share the commitment of the leader. Boys State cultivates leadership and fellowship through example and practice.

PATRIOTISM

The Boys at reateatOklahoma Boys State is committed to cultivating and invigorating patriotism among the young men of our state. Delegates listen to speakers who share their experiences of sacrifice during war time to insure the survival of the nation. They also hear of those who served and continue to serve behind the scenes whose only reward is the satisfaction of contributing to the nation. Distinguished government officials, Armed Service members, Veterans, and community leaders all talk to the delegates about their responsibilities as a citizen to preserve the heritage purchased for them by the heroes of the past.

Delegates also participate in patriotic ceremonies. The Flag is honored each morning and evening as well as at every assembly. The week concludes with a very moving memorial service that remembers and honors those who have served. In all patriotic activities, delegates are directly involved in both planning and executing the programs.

GOD AND COUNTRY

Above all, Boys State is a program the honors God for the blessing bestowed upon the United States and its people and the symbols that represent the ideals upon which the United States is based. Constantly, throughout the week, delegates are reminded of their debt and that the only way to repay that debt is through service above self.
